Love this post! The gaeltacht when I was younger was a haven for giving people fake names – Less Hot Lucas (he looked slightly like Lucas, a character in Home and Away at the time), Brógaí Reatha (a boy in unfortunate runners), Super Tanned Girl etc.. Current favourite name is ‘Ginger Demons’ for the two rather loud red haired children next door….. Yes I know, I’m going to hell!!

ive a hoard of cats at the back of my house who we feed (descendants of our actual cat who we feel sorry for). There’s penny who was percy the persistent until she had kittens and we realised he was a she, dahli, who emerged from the coal bunker one day with a dahli moustache and the name stuck, fatty who then lost weight and became skinny, tabby ( not very imaginitive), dora the explorer, a little kitten who goes EVERYWHERE and now we’ve three new kittens who weve yet to name. There’s also two toms who we like to chase out of the yards cus theyre bollocks’ whom we call big fella and black fella

Yes! I thought it was just us! There is Reggie Michaels, a cat I believe to be the owner of the local corner shop called Michaels. We’ve made up a whole world for him, he’s a clever wheeler dealer, a Del Boy kind of guy, and he drives an Audi and is great with the ladies. His shop, however, is a disgusting hellhole, also, he stares at school children through a hole in the fence of the primary school opposite, which we’re not so sure about being appropriate.

There is also an elderly cat that we call Ghost Cat, just because she’s so old and grey and skinny you can barely see her. Poor old thing. There’s also a sausage dog we call ‘Low to the ground Terry’. Pretty self explanatory.

I loved reading this post today, cheered me right up! More!!

A friend of mine had neighbours called Collins and one way was talking about Jack Collins, the conversation was taking a decidedly weird turn, til I realised Jack “Collins” was the neighbours dog!

Ha! I work as a dairy farmer and i have names for about, oh… 300 cows? Some are named for how they walk, their personality or the way their udders hang. Examples are supertits, big arse, ginger, the real slim shady (dunno how she got that one), spotzilla and Madge. Passes the day to be able to pick them out of the herd. Boss thinks im losing it though…

I do it with people especially shop assistants. I just name them whatever I think suits them… And there is a cat who lives near where I park for work – white face and a rather infamous moustache. Hitler cat he is called!

I make up code names for people all the time. Girl in work had a 04 fiesta and if you park beside her, she will stand watching that you are not tipping her car or even near it. She stands scowling at whoever has the audacity to park beside her in an official parking spot. Anyhoo long story short I call her hatchet face. She looks like she is sucking a lemon all the time,
Also have worked with people I called nice in shorts, leather monkey boy

Love this post. For years,myself & my sis have been giving names to people- generally people we really dislike,my friends and I always had code names for boys back in the day in case we were overhead talking about the ones we fancied!
Amongst the boys we had Boring Jim,Denny sausages, the shrine (a beautiful hurler from.limerick), alphonsus (lads name was actually conor), daffodil Dave ,someone else was veronica,noodle.,ruairi of the gruaig (guy who had a giant ‘r’ belt & equally giant wild hair).there are loads more,these ones just come to mind.
My old housemate Robbie,in his first text to me used predictive text,signed it off as ‘poache’, that was years ago & now we all call him poache!
Like aisling, we have a local guy that I dislike greatly with poofed up hair,we call him ‘blowdry head’, also ‘the gawk’ was name given to a local perv who openly gawps at women – have caught him several times craning his head to spy ladies on the train while popping their luggage in overhead compartments!

Gossipgal, glad to hear my husband and I aren’t the only ones who have actual conversations about other people’s pets. If I see the Phantom Menace or his nice neighbour The Guardian doing something funny on my way home I’ll always tell him about it. Like they’re our mates. It’s a bit worrying really.

Isabelle F, those are particularly brilliant names. I agree that the owners would think we’re all mad for giving their animals names – unless they all do it themselves to other people’s pets, of course…

Laineebridges, I love the fact that you call the neighbouring animals by surnames too! Makes them feel part of the community. I wonder what the Menace’s surname is…

Yes, we have nicknames for people, there’s a cousin of ours who had a friend that was always always with him, I think he even came to our family reunion! So my siblings and I call the friend ‘the brother’. Mum actually has nicknames for parents as well, I guess they are a nickname-able family! Then we discovered that one of Mum’s cousins has the same thing going, the only boy in a family of sisters who has a friend who’s pretty much like brother. So we call him ‘The Original Brother’ (yep, just full of imagination we are!)

There’s probably more as well that aren’t coming to mind
