Clarins Ever Matte Foundation Is A Winner For Oily Or Combination Skin

Clarins Ever Matte Foundation

If you have oily or combination skin, like me, then keeping the dreaded shine at bay is hard enough at the best of times. When temperatures soar? I’d given up all hope. Then Clarins Ever Matte foundation arrived in the post like the answer to my prayers – at the same time as the Irish summer!

The packaging is a departure from Clarins’ usual square glass bottles. It’s lightweight and good for on the go, which I’d say was the intention – the box tells us to reapply as needed. I like the clean lines of the tube and the elegant gold lid is classic Clarins. The product itself has that signature Clarins scent  – fresh and sort of … cucumbery.

The texture is interesting – it has that thick, cushiony type of consistency that has more in common with a BB cream. The initial creaminess gives way to a featherlight finish on the skin. It feels – and looks – incredibly natural, despite the matte finish.

Clarins Ever Matte

(I’m also wearing this Instant Smooth Crystal lip balm from Clarins and the Body Shop Violet eyeliner from this post)

And that’s not where the BB cream similarities end; this also has skin care benefits, with a combination of white tea and botanical extracts that are antioxidant rich. Oh, and SPF 15, too.

Coverage I’d say is light to medium – it’s more full than the brand’s Skin Illusion, but less than Everlasting Foundation. It’s decent, but if you’re prone to breakouts (again, like me), you’ll still need a concealer.

It also lasts well – not as long as Everlasting, but it doesn’t make any longwear claims. Anti-shine is what we’re promised here, and that’s what we get. This really works to control oil throughout the day – it even manages not to melt off the side of my nose, like other foundations do.

Shade choice is decent too – I have shade 109, wheat, and it comes in 10 other shades, 5 of which are paler than this one. I’d steer clear of this if you have dry skin all over but for combo or oily types, this is a real winner. If you’ve been hunting for something to give you a natural, shine-free, polished finish, I’d definitely give this a whirl.

Clarins Ever Matte is on counter now, and can be yours for €32.53. Tempted?

  • It’s gorgeous on you, Em, I love the way you do your FOTD poses like ‘Who? Moi?’

It’s likeness to a BB cream, but not a BB cream definitely piques my interest. May have to pick up a sample x

Am dreadfully tempted to get this, purely due to the excellent write up and not because it’s Clarins and therefore excellent. Emma, what are you doing to me? :)

Sooo tempted… the best foundation I’ve found for keeping skin matte is Clinique Anti-Blemish Foundation. Step above Mac Studio Fix which was quite good until I tried the Clinique. Very interested to hear other people’s opinions on Make Up Forever HD Foundation?? I have very oily skin-very large pores, oily very soon after washing. But I was told by a Make up artist not to buy the MUF HD Matte version as its so thick apparently you would need something like hairspray or whatever to set it?! So went ahead and bought the normal one and it is the worst foundation I have ever used- seems to obviously sink into my pores and has terrible oil control. Either I got bad advice or a dud. Bought the new Lancome Matte one recently, very light coverage so you will need lots of concealer. If you don’t have red marks or blemishes, it is excellent.

Molly, I wouldn’t say MUFE mattifying foundation is very thick. It’s very light on the skin and blends beautifully. although the coverage is medium/full. If you have very oily skin I couldn’t recommend it enough, it’s really very very good. The HD foundation is also good but prone to lodging itself in pores and can be a bit on the slippy side in terms of hold. They have mini foundation samples in most MUFE stores/counters, so maybe ask for one next time you’re in – I think you’ll really like it.

Not sure about Clarins Ever Matte, although it looks great on your skin Emma. I tried it out at the counter and found it a little bit patchy and not mattifying enough, even though I have average oily skin. It doesn’t help that only some of the shades are available here too. Ah well!

I have mufe hd and I really like it!i wear it a lot as my ‘going out ‘ foundation ,love it’s finish an shade range. I set it with a msf from mac,it has good saying power and provides a really flawless base, annoying can only buy it in Dublin or certain sephora abroad!

  • Cait says:

Oh I’d really like to try this if it’s really mattifying. Light coverage would put me off though. I am using the Clinique anti-blemish solutions and like Molly I find it very good but I still need to top up with powder during the day. Clarins Everlasting was next on my list to try but maybe I’ll give this one a shot instead.

  • Janie says:

I have combination skin – wondering did of any of you find this foundation stuck to drier parts of your skin, with that flaky effect?

  • @Cait, it’s more on the medium end so don’t let the coverage level put you off – check it out on counter if you can.

@Janie, I’m combination too and nope, it doesn’t stick to dry patches at all in my experience!
