Kitty, you can’t go wrong with a few pencil skirts and neat trousers matched with plain blouses or tailored T shirts. Give them a bash for the first few days till you get the jist of everybody else in there.

I hope they don’t look at my feet – I’ll be wearing ankle boots. It’s that or my ancient MBTs (only joking) or snowboots. Maybe I’ll bring court shoes in my bag just in case (Doc Martin court shoes, but they’re safe).

Sorry KITC, was going to reply to you but got sidetracked by my panic. We’re a ‘professional’ office too and I usually wear a dress with tights and a cardigan or a skirt with a long sleeve top and cardigan. The others in my office all wear the same. As the girls have said, unless it’s a super high powered office you’ll be fine with a dress/skirt and a top and cardi. I usually don’t bother with a blouse/shirt because they annoy me too much.

KITC, I agree with the others – professional encompasses smart skirts or trousers, smart blouse/tops and smart dresses to suits.

When I’ve dropped into other offices I’ve been surprised at the attire that passes; what I’d call casual has crept in, so I’d say that’s why they’re possibly over-egging it, just to make sure you don’t turn up in casual trousers, a sweater and boots.

Thanks girls. I have a nice black skirt (Zara is so good for these kinds of things!) and a lovely jade-ish cardigan with pearl buttons from Benneton. Guess I’ll figure it out on the first day, but at least I’m covered (litteraly) on arrival.

Orla, do you have IT people in your company that could help?

KITC, for me professional means rather neutral, work-appropriate clothes. So as long as it’s not too short (no comment from Beth on this one, please), nor too “loud” in terms of colour it should be fine. I don’t think skirts are compulsory, really.
Personally, I refuse to wear blouses after September because of the temperature, even in meetings or when wearing a suit.

Kitty In The City- I work in an office and dress code is professional/smart this time of year I mostly wear black trouser/skirt with some variation of cardigan or nice jumper (like Zara basics); with with long sleeve top (white , black stripy all pennys).
Some times going to meeting I wear blazer but its the more casual Zara type ones. Most people I work with wear some variation of the same. Shirts etc I’m more likely to wear in summer.

Unless you are working in law firm type place no need for full on suit type clothing.

I think times they saw professional because if the say smart/casual , some people can lean to far to the casual side.
