Beth TV, seeing as the same PPS number would be attributed to both payments I can’t see how that even works. Anyway, I wouldn’t trust an employer who would engage with you in fraud. Both the employer and the employee are guilty. If an employer would do that, what else would they stoop to? Would they guarantee you had a job to come back to after maternity leave?

Orna,you are right,the pill causes horrendous migraines sometimes,as does the Mirena coil.

Co, are you on the pill by any chance? Was having horrendous migrane and headaches for weeks until I was taken off the pill and within 2/3 days they were gone. Was such a relief!

Atkin, I know what you are saying but the scam involved is curiouser; some employers are issuing pay statements to employees on the pretext that they are paid and taxed as normal but they are declaring to Revenue that they are underpaid and thus dodging a few quid that is due. They are keeping the extra wee bit themselves and nobody is the wiser. In a few cases the staff’s difference is paid through a few bendy accounting ways and no tax etc is paid via Revenue atall atall unbeknownst to the girls. I agree though, it’s dreadfully unfair to tax the benefit when it’s tighter inspections that are needed here and at a time when it’s badly needed.

I don’t start my maternity leave until July so I will be taxed. I have emailed my TDs and Michael Noonan. It is absolutely disgusting. I can’t even contribute to my pension while I’m on leave and my employers’ contributions will stop for the duration too. The maximum is €262 so I’m not sure what I’ll get. It is literally taxing the unborn.

Atkin-I agree! I really don’t understand what the thinking behind it is. It’s 262.00 now as week so depending on what tax your on will depend on what you come out with. Previously they just knocked 10 quid and then 8 quid off it. But to ‘TAX’ it!!! Bizaar.
It also doesn’t come into effect until July next year so still unsure if you go on maternity before it does that mean your exempt or if your mid leave does it begin then? Lots of questions.

Beth that first example isn’t a scam, it is perfectly legal to be paid by your employer while on maternity leave. The benefit is paid to the employer and you still pay tax as normal or your employer pays you the difference between your salary and benefit and you pay tax on that. As for working and claiming at the same time, that goes on with all benefits, if it happens with maternity benefit (and I can’t see how it could) it’s pretty easy to get caught. It’s the most discriminatory, misogynist tax I have ever heard of.

Atkin, I read in the paper some time ago that was two scams going on in relation to Matrenity. First was that some companies were part paying staff who were on maternity and letting them claim the benefit with the end result of they getting a full wage and no tax being paid off of it by the employer and the second was that some people were working and claming at the same time. As usual, a few people screw it up for the honest majority of us.
