Student Style: Yellow Fever With Rimmel Sunshine & Catrice Don’t Feed The Birds

yello nail varnish from rimmel and catrice

What with being stuck inside at work all the time these days, I’ve been missing out on 90% of the summer sunshine. When you wear a uniform of solid black and your place of employment has little or no natural daylight, what better way to grab some of that bright breeziness than via psychedelic nail colour?

I decided to pit Rimmel’s I Love Lasting Finish in Sunshine, €4.53, against Don’t Feed the Birds, €2.79, by Catrice. Both looked canary yellow on the shelf, but upon application were quite different – and I really liked them both.

Sunshine was a surprise to me, as it dried a shade or two darker than it appeared in the bottle. A strong primary yellow, it took three coats to evenly cover my nails, but there was no smudging (although I did keep my hands in the air for a full five minutes after application). I didn’t use a top coat to seal it, but the varnish didn’t chip at all and every time I glanced at my hands it made me feel like I’d been finger-painting. Oh, I should be so lucky!

Don’t Feed the Birds was a different story; upon closer inspection, I spied that this was a very shimmery, almost sheer polish with a gold sheen. It dried to an almost mustard-yellow hue, and I had to apply a few coats to get beyond the Smoker’s Fingers effect – but it was only byooriful once I’d done that. My favourite aspect, as with all Catrice polishes, was the drying time – this hardens like a rock in about a minute.

So, which did I prefer? I couldn’t decide – and then a stroke of genius hit me. Layering the glittery atop the matt gave the desired effect of strong colour and subtle sparkle. The perfect summer nail colour for under €7.50 – yes please!

Love the colours. One of Rimmel’s I Love Lasting Finish, stained my friends nails. Not sure if it was the Sunshine one above or a green one.

Funky colours!! Would love to see a pic of them on your nails! Especially the glittery over the matt one!

Good on ya Kirstie! I sported Zoya Pippa ( a bright yellow) on my toes one day last summer to the total derision of my extended family. Since then I have not braved wearing yellow but I managed to get a gorgeous pale variety from American Apparel a few months ago. It’s called butter and it’s a cross between a lemon and a buttery yellow. Haven’t worn it yet but the bottle is just gorgeous :)

Yellow is hard to wear, I think it depends on your skintone or getting the shade right.

Miffyonline, are you in Ireland? where did you get zoya?
Yellow is def hard to get right, it can look egg at times.

Actually swatched the Catrice one yesterday, it was so pretty!

@ Lauraloo – would it have been Rimmel’s Green Grass? I’ve used both it and Sunshine – both with basecoats, but had no issues with Sunshine. Grass, however, left m’nails with a sickly snotty hue for months after. Had to grow it out in the end, nothing would shift it ¬¬

  • Lauraloo says:

Waffle- Green grass, thats the one. She used a base coat too and her nails were stained really bad, looked like she dipped them in dye.

I picked up a lovely canary yellow polish recently although I can’t remember for the life of me what the brand is and it’s hiding somewhere in the chaos that is my bedroom. Anyways, to the point; as usual i didn’t bother with a base coat and now I’m regretting it. When I took the polish off it left a nasty yellow 60-ciggies-a-day stain on all my finger nails. Wont budge either. So lesson learned, if wearing canary yellow polish then go for a base coat first.

    Think will do one now!

An incredibly sloppy application/terrible shot of Rimmel Sunshine alongside 17 Seabreeze and Mint Choc Chip… I call this abomination, ‘Seaside’

Babyinacornrr, I got my Zoyas from Sparkling*nails on eBay.

A tip for stained nails: whitening toothpaste! Failing that, soak them in a glass with a dissolved dentures tablet. The toothpaste cleaned my totally green nails and hands after a bottle of polish broke in a package i got in the post and I had to clean it up.

gotta love the Barry M polishes!!! they’re the bestest!!!!

    Nice change for my nails…
    Worth trying.

Lads you need an undercoat with that Rimmel range, I used the green one too and it looked like I’d been smoking 40 major a day. The yellow is gorgeous, really vibrant.

Ooh, on another note there’s a Catrice Nail Lacquer stand on the counter in Unicare Pharmacy in the shopping centre in Longford. Picked up a few beauties today at it :)
