Don’t it turn my blue eyes brown: Latisse could change eye colour permanently

By Aisling | August 10 2010 | 25 Comments

We were all excited about the arrival of Latisse the miracle eyelash growing product into the Irish market and told you all about how it was beginning to roll out in Ireland in Jan 09.

But it never happened. Despite being FDA approved there’s been all sorts of problems associated with Latisse and its regulation here.

Latisse is derived from a glaucoma medication, Lumigen, which is much stronger than Latisse and designed to go into the eye rather than around it (i.e. on the lashes). Lumigen has a rather nasty side effect – it can change the colour of the iris and darken it permanently. Increasing the amount of brown pigmentation in the pupil it has turned blue eyes brown.

This is also one of the possible side effects of Latisse. Eek! And you thought David Bowie looked weird.

So still think those longer lashes are worth it? Or would you rather stick to falsies?

    Yes it’s horrible isn’t it!

A few years ago I would’ve considered getting this just for the colour change of my eyes, my eyes are every colour, green around the iris then mainly blue but one eye has a big blob of brown. Hated them a few years back but love that they’re different now :D

I wouldn’t even chance it, but that’s cause I love my eye colour, (greeny gold) and it’s the only part of myself I’ve never considered changing at one point or another. :)

  • Aifs says:

Gee Gee – my eyes are a funny colour too. I can never just describe them with one colour and sometimes I think they change! Thankfully I don’t need longer lashes. They’re the one thing I wouldn’t change about myself! :D

  • Emz says:

God this sounds a little scary to me

  • Gee Gee says:

Aifs – depending on the colour eye makeup I have on, my eyes can look blue or green, I’d say they’re blue but I had a full blown argument with some random guy one night who told me I had gorgeous green eyes and I got so thick telling him my eyes are blue, looked in the mirror in the toilets afterwards and saw that they looked green with the metallicy shadow I had on that night… Opps.

I’m all for falsey, not a hope of me using anything else and you can’t get me to go out on nights out anymore without a few false lashes on – I go for the individuals :D

  • Aifs says:

Gee Gee – yeah mine definitely look different with different shadows. I’d look a bit ridiculous with falsies but lost without mascara. My lashes are brown half way but disappear to blonde at the tops. MUA for sister’s wedding said I should have the individuals like sis. I said o….k. Then she started applying my makeup, spotted my lashes, laughed & said I think I’ll put these away (falsies), your bottom lashes are longer than most people’s top ones!! I’ve only worn falsies once – last Halloween!

  • Gee Gee says:

Aifs – my eyes are a bit deepset so the lashes just help my eyes seem a bit more open. Mine a blondey near the root and then brown on the tips, I go for an occasional eyelash tint to sort the colour out, get the blue-black and my eye colour just pops out then :D

  • Aifs says:

Gee Gee – ooh! Don’t tempt me to get my lashes tinted…..ok do! :D I must try it sometime!

Gee gee my son is 20 and he has blue eyes with one eye having a “blob” of brown in it too. He’s had it from birth. I think its beautiful and very good luck apparently. All the girls notice it. You and him are so lucky to have such a beautiful and striking feature. Be proud.

  • Gee Gee says:

Aifs – definitely try it, makes such a difference to your eyes and is great for when you’re on holidays and saves on mascara-applying time every morning ;)

kittyKat – I love the blob (couldn’t think of any other word when writing my comment) now, makes me a bit different and its quiet rare to see. I’ve only ever met one person outside of my family who has the brown bit in their eye. My dad and one of my nephews both have it.

  • kittyKat says:

Gee gee, I wish I had it. Its so attractive.
My cousin has one green eye and one brown eye. My aunt has one green and one blue. Its a family trait apparently. Mine are just a matching pair of blue.

Snap Gee Gee, a few years ago I used to wear coloured contacts for nights out as I hated my greeny/grey eyes. After a few episodes with (unrelated) sore contacts I stopped completely wearing contacts and embraced my eye colour. I love it now, especially that I can enhance it with makeup and that the look different on different days.

  • Donna says:

I have a real mix of colours in my eyes, light blue, grey, yellow and white flecks. This means I can depending on eye makeup or clothes have bright blue, light blue/grey or blue/green.

Have read about this stuff and people on US boards saying it turns blue eyes brown. Never fancied brown eyes not me, now if it turned them a bright green.

  • Teehee says:

Aw no scary! I’ve green eyes, I love them & I’ve just learned (after many dodgy attempts) how to stick on a nice set of falsies (yay!) so I’ll def steer clear of this!

  • kittyKat says:

Donna I’m laughing at ur comment. I’ve got the same eyes as you. They can look greeny blue or bluey green depending on wot I’m wearing. I used to wish I had brown eyes when I was younger but now I love my blue peepers and woldn’t change them.

  • FrogPrincess says:

I’m one of the weird ones too… I’ve odd eyes… I have blue eyes really but one of them is half brown. Sometimes people notice it straightaway, other times people I’ve known for years will suddenly notice it and freak out!!! It’s sometimes very noticeable in photos or in a certain kind of light. I suppose it’s a little different so why not embrace it???!!! That aside, I don’t like the idea of using a product that has the power to change eye colour as a side effect. I’d stick to the falsies, me!

  • MsSittingatherdeskandpretendingtowork says:

I know we’re getting a bit off topic, but I find bright blue or green eyes a bit freaky. Bright blue eyed people (think Pierce Brosnan or Paul Newman) remind me of porcelain dolls.

  • Gee Gee says:

mademoiselle – I never got the coloured contacts, mainly cos I was told them wouldn’t change the colour of my eyes properly but I’m all the better for it now, I know one girl who has lovely nature blue eyes and wears brown contacts all the time to look more mainland-european.

FrogPrincess – woohoo to another multi-coloured eyed :D

Misssitting – PG has little blue eyes and I think they’re fab on him but that’s cos he’s pale and has blondey-red hair so they suit his colouring, any other coloured eyes and he’d look weird.
