following my earlier post on my reaction to a clarins suncream I thought I would post again to say that I have found two dermalogica products that are both chemical free - their ultra sensitive and super sensitive faceblocks. Dermalogica to the rescue again!

re sun allergies: the itchy rash you get on your neck/chest is more often a reaction to UVA rays than an allergy to the sunscreen itself.
Using a sun product with a high SPF means you're well covered against UVBs (the ones that make you tan and burn) but doesn't guarantee the best protection against UVA rays. I stick to the brands my pharmacist recommends, ususally Vichy and La roche Posey who do special products against heat rash. the Vichy body gel smells gorgeous, peachy kind of.. and i use a tinted face cream from le roche posey.
Zirtek will get rid of the itch but doesn't protect your skin from the harm done by those nasty UVAs.

Hey Ladies,

Can I make a recommendation? I too was a sizzling hot sun whore till the heat got to me in the end and I ended up having to shroud myself in numerous sarongs to stave off that horrible rash, UNTIL that is, I read an article in Instyle which gave rave reviews for DDF sunscreen. its really lightweight so your skin doesn't heat up as much underneath it. You see, I think the rash comes from clogging sunscreens, not from the sun - maybe that's just me though. Yonka products are also really good and you can get them in free spirit 3rd floor in Dundrum. you can get the DDF stuff on Amazon.com - I haven't come across anywhere in Ireland that sells it.

Happy holidays!

'Cept the only issue is some people's skins react to Mexoryl (like poor lil' ole' moi).

But that aside it's generally very well tolerated and super-high PPD (like, the SPF 40/50 fluids and creams are hitting 28!!!). Great stuff if you're heading for super-sunny climes.

And the FDA has approved one form of Mexoryl (SL or S) but not the other, more recently-developed, more potent one (XL). There's a great trade going on with Canada, where both are avilable. Poor old US people. But it's nice to get to be smug occasionally over here! I've seen Irish sellers on Ebay making a fortune on Anthelios ... it's like prohibition and whiskey all over again. Except I guess you can't drink this stuff. Then again, I could be wrong - haven't tried.

londongirl - stay tuned and we'll have a post on that!

Mole - yeah that's right about the Menoxyl - that's why European suncreams are so much better than the US ones.
I read a really good article about it recently, must dig it out... Apparently the US drug companies fought tooth and nail for the not-as-good-ingredients to remain the only approved ones.

Menoxyl is FDA approved now though
